---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Barbara.Harriss <m("canberra.edu.au","Barbara.Harriss");');" target="_blank">> Date: Thursday, 26 March 2015 Subject: IAE SEMINAR SERIES - CHANGE IN SPEAKER AND PRESENTATION (27 March 2015) To: Please note that there has been a last minute change in speaker and presentation for tomorrow’s IAE Seminar. It is anticipated that Prof Ralph Mac Nally will present at a later date.
Dear All,
Please see below details of this coming Friday’s IAE Seminar (Ross Thompson):
Institute for Applied Ecology Seminar SeriesCHANGE OF SPEAKER AND PRESENTATION FOR 27 March 2015FUNCTIONING WATERWAYS IN FUTURE CITIES
Speaker: Professor Ross M ThompsonInstitute for Applied Ecology, University of CanberraAs an ever increasing amount of our global population is concentrated in cities, the pressure that urbanisation places on freshwater resources becomes ever more acute. The influence of cities on regional water cycles is pervasive, and the list of services that city-dwellers expect from water is lengthy. I will use a conceptual ‘future city’ to detail the water challenges that we will face and how those will impact on the ecological values of urban freshwater ecosystems. In a world dominated by water markets, urban water use and water for agriculture will increasingly come into conflict. Those drivers will force cities towards solutions which greatly increase the costs of potable water (desalinisation and recycling). That cost will drive rationalisations in the use of potable water for green-space irrigation and change the perspective on our ‘natural’ urban water systems. Instead of just flood management, urban waterways will be the focus of development for recycling and reuse, storage for irrigation and micro-climate management. I will describe my vision of what an urban water system could look like in that theoretical future, and what our research needs are if we are to be prepared to embrace that future. When: 27 March, 2015Time: 11:30 am-12:30pm Venue: Building 12, Level B, Room 2, University of Canberra This is a free event, please distribute to your networks
Professor Ross Thompson is Acting Director and an ARC Future Fellow in the Institute for Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra. His research is in the area of community and ecosystem ecology, with an emphasis on the study of biodiversity, food web structure and the restoration of landscapes. Ross’ fundamental research is in food web ecology; seeking the rules that determine how natural communities assemble and persist.
His applied research addresses the ways in which food webs can be influenced by climate change, toxins and invasive species, and how we can restore and protect biodiverse communities in human-impacted landscapes. Ross has led multidisciplinary research projects with ecologists, hydrologists, social scientists, economists, policy makers and management agencies. He maintains a strong interest in science communication and education.
Regards
Barbara
