WHEN THE NATIVES GO FERAL …

The threat of irruptive natives to Australia’s feathered folk

Speaker: Professor Ralph Mac Nally

Institute for Applied Ecology

University of Canberra

Many of Australia’s land-birds have been in decline for decades, especially in the south, due to widespread land-use change; climate change has exacerbated these declines. A beneficiary of both land-use and climate change has been the native honeyeater, the noisy miner Manorina melanocephala, which has become more widely distributed and abundant since the onset of the Big Dry (1997). Scientists and biodiversity managers, who collectively have worked on the ecological impacts of noisy miners for decades, now have reached a consensus understanding on the miner’s effects on the bird assemblages of eastern Australia. This presentation provides conceptual models and analyses that summarise that understanding, and concludes with a management framework to deal with this pervasive ecological threat.

When: 27 March, 2015

Time: 11:30 am-12:30pm

Venue: Building 12, Level B, Room 2, University of Canberra

This is a free event, please distribute to your networks if applicable. No RSVP required.

ABOUT RALPH:

Ralph trained as a community ecologist at The University of Melbourne but moved into the emerging disciplines of conservation ecology, landscape ecology and ecological futures. He assimilates research outcomes from terrestrial, freshwater and estuarine ecology with large-scale modelling to handle landscapes as integrated systems. Ralph now is most interested in unifying these advances with projected regional, national and global changes in human actions, including land-use and accelerated climate change, to understand the range of ecological and biodiversity consequences that are likely to arise in the next several decades. Outcomes of this work inform management and policy options to ameliorate adverse effects for Australia’s and global biodiversity. He served for 13 years (1995-2007) on the editorial board for Austral Ecology, since 2005 with Diversity & Distributions, and since 2014 for the Journal of Applied Ecology. Ralph holds a DSc from his alma mater and received an Australian Research Council Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award in 2012.
