Folks

Josh is quite right, there are plenty about.  Like being in Europe in late summer at the moment round my place.  If you are not confident of what to do in a domestic / workplace situation then call a licenced pest controller.  A good understanding of where the nest entry point(s) are is essential, take time to carefully locate these, the pesto will need to know.

There are registered products available for the householder the control of wasps. An example http://websvr.infopest.com.au/LabelRouter?LabelType=L&ProductCode=54158  A dust or foam formulation is the best choice for a nest entry point.  Don't bother with flysprays.   If you are confident to go down that road then you should cover yourself up, wait till night, better early morning when it is colder, before the sun comes up. if you need a torch to illuminate the area, a red one is best as it is a colour that most insects cannot see well or at all.  Do the deed as per the label and clear off.  Monitor and repeat if required.

Right now, it is important to take care with drinks, ice creams etc. Kids especially are better off drinking from cans or bottles via a straw or using a glass.  Common sense in summer if you come from Europe.  Swallowing a wasp is potentially life threatening.

Hi again!

I just wanted to mention as a general warning that this year has been particularly favourable for European Wasps. European wasps are black and yellow and nest predominantly in the ground. If you come across a nest on government land do not approach it, and contact XCS Consulting European Wasp Hotline on 6162 1914 or call Canberra Connect on 13 22 81. You can find out more about wasps here: http://www.tams.act.gov.au/parks-recreation/plants_and_animals/Biosecurity/vertebrate_pest_management/pest_animals/insect/wasps

Cheers
