Sorry, I just checked my other photos and notes and noticed that I’d got the species back to front in my last post. The Little pieds were on the nests and the two little blacks (one of which was pictured) were perched and not obviously nesting, but could have been off one of the unoccupied nests I suppose, but I don’t know with these two species ever share colonies like that.

The attached photo is of a little black cormorant I photographed in Royal National Park last weekend. The bird was in a colony on little black cormorants on nests, with a couple of little pied cormorants also perched around. I couldn’t see any little pied cormorants on nests, so am not sure if they were just visiting or were also nesting amongst the little blacks. Does that happen?

What interested me about this bird was the white on its face and especially by the white flash by its ‘ear’ which appear to me to me most unusual. Does anyone have any insights.

While the wings are typical, they look great in this photo I think (better in the original of course).
