The Australian Copyright Council has some great information on copyright as applied to photos:
The Photographers & Copyright (G011v17) document will be of most interest. Copyright is automatic. All rights reserved. When you publish to services such as Flickr or Facebook you agree to their terms which include granting them a license to republish your work online … obvious, because you're publishing the photo online. You still have rights. Personally, I license all my photos under a Creative Commons license on Flickr so people are free to take and use them for non-commercial purposes. They don't need to ask permission, they don't need to pay me money, but they do have to credit me as the photographer.
