BF Dotterel

Thanks for your comments about BF Dotterels. They connect with two interesting observations I have made over the past few years about BF dotterels. First, they seem to like smaller expanses of water. Around Gungahlin, I see them regularly at the small Crace Pond, Forde Creek, and the smaller upper pools of The Valley Ponds. I do not see them at the larger Gungahlin lake, and hardly ever at the large Yerrabi Pond. They like little shallow mud flats etc.  Second, when disturbed they are more likely to fly off than to scurry into the reeds which makes me wonder if more reed growth at Weston Ponds will make much difference. What they seem to like at , say, Crace Pond is that they can fly away and perch on a rock somewhere else or go to another shallow mud flat. When one flies off the other one joins it very soon. Once you have seen them you can usually know where they are because they do not necessarily fly out of sight but only further away.

There are also many at the new Weston Ponds, hard to count as they are very skittish as people are letting their dogs chase the birds & also swim so the birds fly off quickly or the ducks swim into the middle.  The reeds are still fairly sparse so no protection there yet but maybe in time!

I have been reporting BF Dotterels from Crace Wetlands at least monthly for over two years, up to 8 of them sometimes but lately just the two 2 of them.  COG records have BF Dotterels as uncommon but that may perhaps have to change. I walked for about 1 km up Forde Creek yesterday and passed ten or so pools. There was at least a pair of dotterels at each one, some with young.

Ditto from the Casey Ponds. There's one pair that seem to move between the main pond near the Dog Park and the smaller pond bear the new 7 Eleven.
