Koel in Hughes

As I said in a previous post we didn't have a Koel calling in Hughes until January, even though one was calling in Garran from November.

Since then there has been a lot of calling and wirra-wirraing in response. 

On Saturday when the thunderstorm (and the Needletails came through) the male was calling up to the start of the storm, but not during.

And, I know we have had various versions of this over the years, but this is the one I sing:

The first 'Koel' the cuckoo did sing
Was to certain poor birders in beds as they lay:
4 o'clock, 4 o'clock, 4 o'clock, o'clock
Ti-ime to start your bi-ird watching!
