Hi Julie,
Some years ago I observed rails over a couple of breeding seasons. These ones seem to be the same ones I saw last week. They have to be about 2 weeks old at the time of the photos. By 3 weeks some of the down should be being visibly replaced by feathers.
Maybe someone in COG has more detailed knowledge than me but breeding records are rare in the ACT. My rather amateur observations are from the N T some years ago. Perhaps my comments will prompt someone who knows more.

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone with much more knowledge of rails than me will be able to help me with determining the approximate age of these Buff-banded Rail chicks.

The first three photos are taken on the same day ... same chicks.

The next three photos were taken at a different time and may or may not be the same chicks.

Also, if anyone has more information about the development of BBR chicks or can let me know of good resources, I'd very much appreciate it.

Cheers
Julie
