Not in the COG area (we're spending Christmas in Perth), but we were
riding the bike path around the Swan River this morning, and spent quite
a few minutes watching a Nankeen Night Heron hunting in the shallows off
the South Perth foreshore, only half a dozen metres from the bikepath
and less than a dozen metres from the six lane Kwinana Freeway. The
references I looked at (Pizzey & Knight, Morcombe, Birds in backyards)
say that the bird is nocturnal, but this is not the first time that
we've seen them active during the middle of the day.
