Earlier today we reported a Little Bittern at the pond in our back garden. This surprising observation was reported on Eremaea Birdlines and included a photo of the bird lurking in a shrub.  Here is an update. We have seen the bird repeatedly during the afternoon, including watching it catch a frog. It is very shy but does come out into the open fairly readily.

And just for those wondering: we live on a standard quarter acre block in the burbs. The pond is only about 2.5 metres by 2 metres in size, has local native water plants in and around it (but no cumbungi) and is a source of great pleasure to us.

I expect it will disappear over night
