Yesterday afternoon at CP for about 20 minutes we watched two brown Flame Robins and a recent fledgling.  At least one bird was feeding the fledgling.  We could not ascertain whether both birds fed the fledgling.

Quite a good number of years ago a pair of Flame Robins, consisting of two brown birds,  was also nesting in the Campbell Park area. They managed to raise one young. HANZAB does mention brown males involved in breeding.

Hi all

Is there any explanation why the two Flame Robins “with the nest near the Owlet Nightjar are plain brown birds”?  I’ve seen them as well and was confused.  Do young males breed in immature plumage?  Or is something else going on?

Earlier in the year I found a pair of Flames (one a coloured male, the other a brown bird) building in Campbell Park. They also carried out a routine of what looked to be hopping sideways while facing each on the ground, with the male, from time to time, squatting on the ground.
This nesting attempt was abandoned. Today, also in Campbell Park, a male Flame fed something to a begging plain brown Flame. The latter looked to be a female rather than a juvenile. Given that the two with the nest near the Owlet Nightjar are plain brown birds, that would make a two and possibly three breeding attempts by Flames in Campbell Park this year.

Yes Robin -  looks like a pair, male in partial eclipse.  Number 99?

I met a few COGgers at CP this morning to learn the outcome of the debate as to whether the nest behind a flap of bark was occupied by a Flame Robin or a Scarlet Robin - those voting for Flame won the day. Whilst in the area, I snapped a couple of ducks on the pond, and at the time, dismissed them as Grey Teals. However, on taking a closer look at the pictures, I can't account for the dark head of the male. Its not green (as shown in all the reference books) ... but could this be a pair of Chestnut Teals?
