I arrived at the AIS about 10am only to see the bird fly off and head north across Ginninderra Dr. It was relocated but quickly disappeared.

The Australasian Bittern was showing well at the AIS pond this morning too, at about 7:30 am. It was first sighted at the edge of the reeds in the northwest corner of the pond, where it stayed quite still for 15 minutes or so, then took off and flew back along the pond, perched for a moment on a power-pole, hassled by two magpies, and flew down into reeds along the southern side of the pond and disappeared. It was then too shy to offer further sightings before I had to go to work.
In flight, it resembled a cross between a bulky whistling kite and a pelican – the colour and wing-flaps of the kite, but almost the heaviness of the pelican - and bigger than you would expect from seeing the bird in the reeds.
Has anyone seen the Little Bittern recently?

This afternoon the A. Bittern was at the AIS pond from about 3:45 to 5:15.
