Thanks! I have seen Scarlet honeyeaters this week myself near the creek
further north a bit in Nichols. We should not underestimate the importance
of Ginninderra Creek to birdwatching in the north of Canberra. It is the
source of three very substantial bodies of water, Lake Ginninderra,
Gungahlin Pond and Yerrabi Pond which should be called lakes as well. And
if you include its tributaries and catchment, it is also the source of 5
or 6 more constructed wetland systems. But just as significant is the
creek itself which still flows despite all the dams. It is the flight
corridor for water birds between Gungahlin and Yerrabi Ponds and Lake
Ginninderra and where it has been allowed to retain its floodplain, its
reeds and native grasses are a very important, even perhaps unique to
Canberra habitat for grass-dwelling species. I will be able to point some
of this out to folk on tomorrow¹s wetland walk.
