A NEW APPROACH TO BIOLOGICAL CONSERVATION IN A ERA OF CLIMATE CHANGE
The early 21st century has seen the sixth great extinction in Earth’s
history gather pace. Directly or indirectly, through hunting, habitat
destruction, introduced pathogens, climate change and ocean acidification,
humans are responsible for its myriad manifestations. In the absence of change,
by the end of the 21st century around 20% of all species alive today could be
extinct.
In many countries, including Australia, existing policies and
infrastructure are inadequate to deal with the threats. Hundreds of millions of
dollars are spent in the name of biodiversity conservation, yet we achieve
little.
Prof. Tim Flannery, world renowned ecologist and author of the award
winning book The Future Eaters and The Weather Makers, will discuss the need for
both climate change and biodiversity conservation to have long-term, consistent
policy.
