Thanks Bruce, on my arrival home today I could hear two calls, and see the large one calling in my neighbour’s Chinese elm, and trace the second to a much smaller (but still highly coloured) bird close to the corner of Darwinia Tce and Angophora St Rivett, less than 200 m away.

So despite the seemingly low Koel activity nearby this season, at least two have fledged locally.  Now that I know the call I now suspect there was one last year as well in the same shrubbery off the lane last year but it remained hidden from view (perhaps a younger bird?).

This morning around 7.45, in a lane about 100m from my place in Chapman (and about 30m from Jack Holland’s) I was puzzled by a repeated loud “a row” bird call, which on inspection turned out to be a quite advanced juvenile Eastern Koel, being fed by Red Wattlebirds. Almost certainly the same or one of the same birds reported recently, by Jack.

Cheers,

Bruce
