The bird was also visible for about 5 minutes yesterday evening on the mud patch on the northern side of the pond. It sat preening for a while in clear view and then moved towards us (ran very quickly and flew) across the open mud before being seen off by a Spotted Crake. The Lewin’s Rail was still visible after the first chase so the Spotted Crake chased it again until it disappeared into some long grass on the edge of the sandy area. The crake, apparently satisfied with its effort, then returned to feeding around the small puddle near the bank. Unfortunately the chase was too quick to capture on video.

        Thanks to Alistair Smith who posted seeing the Lewin’s Rail Yesterday, i got lucky seeing it immerge from the reeds nearest the visitors centre this morning. This is the first time i have this bird, so it makes a pretty special day.
