On Sunday (5.1.14) Julienne Kamprad and I set out to do the waterbird count
at Lake George, only to find it completely dry. Just a month
ago it was still supporting significant numbers of ducks, in fact around 24,000,
of which almost 80% were Pink-eared Ducks. The lake lived up to its role as a
drought refuge for waterbirds. It may be some time before it can have that role
again. We did not feel like celebrating as Martin has suggested for Kelly’s
Swamp.
We continued to Rose Lagoon and got quite a satisfactory view of an
Australasian Bittern as it crossed the ‘reeds’ for some distance.
