three of us had a very fruitful visit arriving about 0830 at the southern end near a prominent strainer post assembly. Walking on the dry  outer edges whilst observing numerous royal spoonbills, intermediate egrets, pacific and white faced herons from about 200 metres  two of us clearly saw two largish, brown and black streaked birds rise above the reed beds and fly ungainly for at least 25 metres before sinking back out of view.  There was no time to view these birds with bins or telescope but I am at least 90% confident it was my first tick for Australasian bitterns. As well as the numerous  lathams snipe, two types of ibis, raptors noted were the resident swamp harrier,  wedgetails, and peregrine falcon, plus a  kestrel among more common birds. Visitors should wear appropiate footwear as snakes are present. Terry B.
