three of us had a very fruitful visit arriving
about 0830 at the southern end near a prominent strainer post
assembly. Walking on the dry outer edges whilst observing numerous
royal spoonbills, intermediate egrets, pacific and white faced herons from about
200 metres two of us clearly saw two largish, brown and black streaked
birds rise above the reed beds and fly ungainly for at least 25 metres before
sinking back out of view. There was no time to view these birds with
bins or telescope but I am at least 90% confident it was my first tick for
Australasian bitterns. As well as the numerous lathams snipe, two types of
ibis, raptors noted were the resident swamp harrier, wedgetails, and
peregrine falcon, plus a kestrel among more common birds. Visitors should
wear appropiate footwear as snakes are present. Terry
