Further to my report yesterday on the breeding of the Buff-banded Rail near Yarralumla, I mentioned the then RAOU’s Nest Record Scheme. Several of the (at the time!!) young birdos in Canberra - Barry Baker, Neil Hermes and myself plus others – assisted the late Stephen Marchant by climbing to nests that he could reach or actively found our “own” nests. The Restless Flycatcher was a reasonably common breeding bird in those days. The NRS is a resource that COG should try and access as it will increase our knowledge of breeding species locally from that era and provide a good comparison to today. Dec., Roger Williams and I observed a pair of Restless Flycatchers at their nest (at least 3 young in it) on a private property near Gundaroo. According to the information Steve Wallace kindly provided, there are 29 previous breeding records for this species in the COG database. However, our. obs. is the first since 2007. |
