Anyone travelling up to Newcastle should take advantage of the opportunity to see over 5,000 Avocets currently there.  There were 3,000 roosting at the area under Stockton Bridge on Friday late afternoon together with 130 Eastern Curlew (a very large number for this area) and over 500 Bar-tailed Godwits with a few Black-tailed Godwits thrown in for good measure.  Worth checking with the Hunter Bird Observers Club (Chris Herbert and Liz Crawford) for tide times.  There were over 1,500 Avocets roosting at Ash Island at the same time.
