I think you are probably right. Mostly because you were there and suggest that. It looks consistent and I can't think of any other that fits or is more likely. I'm not an expert on them but just looked a book. I think I have only observed black honeyeaters 2 or 3 times and one time was 1984 at Cocoparra, sort of near there, the other time close to 20 years ago in Canberra.

Dear Philip,
I visited Leeton in the weekend and photographed this honeyeater. It was the size and shape of an eastern spinebill, but its markings were very different. I think it may be a female black honeyeater, but need a bit of an expert opinion. Follow the links to photos.
