Well, we ought remember that Brushtailed Possums are known predators of nests. So quite possibly the noise was justified. Their introduction to New Zealand has had an horrific impact on bird species there. Such behaviour in Australia is considered normal, but not extraordinary (but the Cockatoos are more likely to be able to protect/defend their nests than smaller birds).
