I also followed up Steve Read’s sighting (thanks Steve) of an Australian Painted-snipe. It (a male) was resting under the dock plant between the two ‘fallen logs’ out from Ardea Hide. It was there from at least 11:20 to 12:15 h on Sunday 1 December. At first it was standing, then sat down and stayed in that position and location until I left. Very well camouflaged.

I’ve prepared a rarities report for the COG panel with some poor photos that definitively identify it as a male based on colour of eye surround, colour of neck and side of breast, and to a lesser extent, patterning of the wings which were mainly in dappled light.

Cheers,

Harvey Perkins

Steve W has given a good description of the exact location where the Painted-snipe was last Saturday.

Eremaea list 208709 notes the bird as a female.  The bird I saw on three separate occasions last Saturday rarely left cover, and on the one occasion it did the light was poor, so I could not tell if it was a male or female.

Yesterday a male made a brief appearance in front of Ardea hide. It was between the two big logs in the area to the right, under the Dock plant.
