Emerald Dove in Aranda

This afternoon a work colleague, Patrick, showed me 5-10 seconds of phone video that he took this morning of an Emerald Dove in his back garden in Aranda. It had been eating the chook food. I went back to his place after work but there was no sign of the dove.

 

It turns out his next door neighbour is Peter Ormay, so I let Peter know about the sighting and to be on the lookout for it. Patrick will also be looking for it in case it comes back again in the morning.

 

The bird may well be an escaped aviary bird, but there is also the possibility that it is a wild bird rather out of normal range for the species. As far as I can determine, Emerald Dove has never been recorded in the ACT, though HANZAB has it being recorded down the NSW coast to as for as Burrewarra Point ( just south of Batemans Bay), with very occasional records in coastal Gippsland in Victoria.
