Another fruitful trip to Lake Cargelligo this week.  Still plenty of water in the sewage works on the edge of town and a wide variety of species – around 50 species close to town.  Highlights were Crimson  and White-fronted Chats, Major Mitchell Cockatoos, Sharp –tailed and Marsh Sandpipers, White-winged Fairy Wrens, Plum-headed Finches, a lone Wandering Whistling Duck, Spotted, Spotless and Baillon’s Crakes and up to 30 Red-necked Avocet.  Well worth a visit and the town is keen to have more birding visitors.

 

Other places visited:

 

• Gum Swamp outside Forbes had up to a dozen Freckled Duck
• Campbell’s Swamp outside Griffith also had Crimson Chats
• Fivebough at Leeton turned up around 50 species including Magpie Geese, Avocet, White-fronted Chat, Yellow-billed Spoonbill
• Binya SF/Wattle Dam provided over 30 species including Turquoise Parrots, Mulga Parrots, Diamond Firetail, Horsfield’s Bronze Cuckoo, Splendid and Variegated Fairy Wrens and Painted Honeyeater
• Woodswallows were much in evidence most places – White-browed, White-breasted and Dusky
• no sign of White-backed Swallows at Tuckerbill Swamp unfortunately

 

The trip overall, over 4 days and abut 1100 kms, yielded some 130 species.  A full typed list will be available shortly if anyone is interested.
