Just had a Channel-billed Cuckoo fly over my house (in Gleneagles,
Kambah) heading NW (in the general direction of the Cotter/Casuarina
Sands I guess, not that I'm suggesting that's where it was going). It
was fairly high, flying steadily and calling raucously as it went.
I've heard Channel-bills fly past here in previous years, but this is
the first time I've managed to get outside, with binoculars, in time
to see one.
I was out in our garden (in Griffith) at about 10am and a fairly large
bird (about SCC size) with an unfamiliar loud call flew low overhead in
a Westerly direction. As I was under a tree at the time, and it was
travelling swiftly, I didn't get any sort of a decent look at it, but
after listening to the calls of various similar-sized birds on my Birds
of Australia phone app, the Channel-billed Cuckoo is the only call that
fits.
