as I'd guessed, they were a Coprosma - in fact Coprosma hirtella, or the Rough-leaf currant-bush. The Fraser/McJannett Wildflowers of the Snow Country says they are "edible" but not "palatable". and yes, Chris - you were right with meaning of name, but the book says it doesn't really apply (dung-odoured) to this species.
