Further to so-called hazard reduction burns: the last time I was in the mountains my intention was to return by way of Warks Road. I couldn't do so because a hazard reduction burn was in progress... I wonder whether the Warks road gullies have been burned as well? We all know how prominently they feature in our limited records of certain species.

I support hazard reduction burning in peri-urban areas. There are conflicting values and no government is going to survive if it continues to allow suburbs burning.

But it is difficult to see how burning our relatively scarce wet gully habitats in the Brindabellas 20-30km from urban boundaries is either necessary or desirable.

If the issue is water quality in our dams, which is also a relevant value, then I suggest that burning 6000 acre blocks at a time is an unnecessarily heavy-handed approach.

regards

Con
