COG members may wish to note that Victorian Wetlands have been closed to the Public for specific hours, during that State's Duck Season - which runs for 12 weeks.
May I respectfully suggest that COG members forward the attached notice to all Victorians with whom you are friends - especially Birders. How anyone could confuse a mid-sized white bird with a dark brown head, and really long legs, which is a "wader" (an Avocet) - with a registered hunting species of Duck is beyond my understanding. All I can conclude is that it was flying, therefore it had to be shot. This must work to the discrediting of the Duck Hunters of Victoria. Denis Wilson It's
Duck Season in Victoria. Terrible photos have come to light of dead birds, including Pink-eared Ducks, Grey Teal, Eurasian Coots, Red-necked Avocets, Blue-billed Ducks and Hardheads. This is what happens when hunters shoot indiscriminately into flocks - how else could you mistake an avocet for a duck? And did you know that this season Victoria’s wetlands will also be off-limits to members of the general public before 10 am and for two hours before sunset unless they have licence to shoot ducks? This restriction is effective for the entire 12 weeks of the duck season. To register your protest, contact your local State MP and Minister Peter Walsh. Their details are here: http://www.vic.gov.au/contactsandservices/directory/?ea0_lfz149_120.&organizationalUnit&d36b8970-490d-4b28-b507-f537e77c77c8 Denis Wilson If you're not pissed off with the World, you're just not paying attention.
