A flock/constellation (What is the collective noun?) of swifts put on an
aerial display at Nowra Hill last Wednesday 14th from 1145h till 1200h .
Numbering from 12-20 they were there when we arrived and still hawking
when we left. The hill is to the east of the Albatross air base and
rises like an enormous pimple on the Shoalhaven plain. They were all
WTNT's and cruised just over the hill crest, stooped below eye level and
seemed to be wrapping themselves around the hill. The white underparts
were visible. Around midday on a humid day, there must have been an
updraft that included a good supply of insects. Far more impressive than
any air show at the nearby base. Has anyone else observed this behaviour
at Nowra Hill or any other elevated sites? Could this be the swift
hotspot for the district?
