Matt - Here are low-light photos of Yellow-tufted and WPHE if that is what you want. Your description does not fit a WPHE at all - a Fuscous might be more likely. The g fantail scale doesn’t really fit either - a poor reference for length because of the disproportionate tail. One of the honeyeaters you know would be a better reference. The bright yellow on the YTHE usually makes it unmistakeable

Subject: [canberrabirds] Unidentifiable bird
Hi All
I was in the hills around Warrambui yesterday afternoon when I encountered a bird I did not recognise. The bird was maybe two thirds the length of a fantail, appeared to be quite dark (probably due to the low light), had black "eye-patches," and had a lighter coloured horizontal crescent sliver behind and making contact with the eye-patches. I did not recognise the bird, and after looking at some pictures, the best matches are the yellow-tuffted honeyeater and the white-plumed honeyeater. However, the colouring of the eye-patches seemed to be nearly black in colour. Does anyone else have a suggestion and/or photos of these birds in low-light conditions?
Matt.
