Hi all,

Since I returned from South America several weeks ago the local Kaleen (?Giralang) koel has been busy in my neck of the woods. I usually hear him in the area of the central/northern parts of the suburb between about 5 – 6 am and I’ve seen him several times in a neighbours tree across the road later in the morning. He still hasn’t made it onto the birds recorded specifically in my garden (as opposed to a GBS record) but was calling from a dense willow in another neighbours yard about 15 metres away.

Another bird that has suddenly turned up lately and one that I haven’t seen on my side of Kaleen for many, many years are Gang-gang Cockatoos. Yesterday a pair were feeding in a Hawthorn in the neighbour’s yard across the walkway and this morning they were calling a little further up the street.

I am also getting small flocks of Superb Parrots flying through but am not quick enough to get outside to count them. Judging by their calls it is possibly only small family groups – 4 or 5 birds.

Happy New Year to one and all.

Mark
