Rhynchokinesis: Or a
special type of cranial kinesis. If you look at "cranial
kinesis" in wikipedia (by Google search) you will find a lot about it. Including
a list of species of birds in which it has been demonstrated, to which we have
added some (hardly surprising). It also mentions prokinesis which is what I described for parrots
& finches but the process is the same, just the location of the hinge has
moved. Theoretically there should also be some ability to bend the upper
mandible downwards slightly just by pulling the hinge backwards rather than
forwards. That would seem to be useful when probing in soft mud. I haven't seen
that though.

Re the recent
discussion of rhynchokinesis, the attached photo taken at Jerrabomberra Wetlands
today shows this skill being demonstrated while
preening.
