I'm not surprised at the reaction of the fishing "community": somewhat similar to the views that would be expressed by the Shooters and Fishers Party in NSW.

Its very pleasing to see that one of the biologists quoted as cautioning against jumping to conclusions is employed by the local Band of an indigenous group.

Hi

An interesting post on the conflicts involved in cormorant 'management' in the US

http://www.minnpost.com/politics-policy/2008/07/most-hated-bird-world-sanctioned-killing-cormorants-continues-unabated-minne

While reading it I wondered about the bird 'culls', official and unofficial, happen in Australia. I suggest the following:

(1) raptors
(2) ducks in rice farms
(3) all sorts of birds in fruit farms
(4) Common Mynas in two cities
(5) Rock Doves
(6) 'Mallee snowstorm'

Offset against these are all sorts of efforts by groups, institutions, governments and landholders to do the opposite: provide new habitat for birds or improve degraded habitat for birds.

I have not put in muttonbirds because I would classify that as a 'harvest' rather than a 'cull'.
