Thanks Duncan, the bird was seen again twice tonight, the second time on the grass just outside my fence staying still out in the open where I could walk right past it (< 5 metres away).  It certainly is getting bolder, and hopefully cleaning up the snails in our garden rather than the frogs in our pond.

Buff-banded Rails have only been recorded in the GBS a couple of times before. Once in 1984 in the ANU grounds, and in 3 weeks last GBS year (2011/12, in Oct, Nov & Jan) in my site in Giralang. All records so far are of single birds.
 
They must be on the increase. Before long they'll take over the place.
