- I have two marginally relevant observations:
a)
By
coincidence, more than 10 years ago I picked up a similarly intact specimen (now
at Gungahlin)along the same stretch, more between Stockinbingal and Jindalee SF,
mid-morning, apparently not long killed
b)
Barn
Owls are often flushed from roosts during daylight. I still remember the
occasion more than 60 years ago, when the kids at North Geelong State School
cruelly flushed a Barn Owl from the shelter-sheds and ran, a shrilling horde,
the length of the playground in the forlorn owl-wake

Unusual road kill??

On out trip to Port Lincoln we flushed a Barn Owl from a
Melaleuca in coastal scrub at about 1600 - which would fit the timing of your
event. It was still daylight but heading towards evening so perhaps the
bird was getting ready to go hunting.
It certainly had a full alimentary canal when it took off, a
situation remedied in an extreme manner within about 4 wingbeats - fortunately
not over our heads.

there was a recently killed Barn Owl. From the appearance of the injuries,
the fact that it had not been run over since the original hit, and that I’m
pretty sure it wasn’t there when we went out, I think the accident must have
occurred between 1430 and 1630 in full daylight.
Isn’t this a bit unusual?
