Since the Pinnacle NR was closed at the end of last month for the roo
cull, I've been walking the dog (my pretext for birdwatching) at Lake
Ginninderra. While I do most of my birdwatching at the Pinnacle, I've
still been a fairly regular visitor to Lake Ginn. over the years, and I
was surprised to see a few unexpected birds there in my recent visits.
Last Thursday, I encountered a small MFF at the top end of the western
shoreline, near Ginninderra Drive, consisting of several Yellow-rumped
Thornbills, a couple of Golden Whistlers, two Grey Fantails and a pair
of Scarlet Robins. I don't ever recall seeing Scarlet Robins at Lake
Ginn before. The next day, I went back and found the same group minus
the fantails and one of the whistlers.
Yesterday I was admiring the view from the end of the peninsula in the
middle of the lake and a group of 8 Gang-Gangs flew over, heading for
John Knight park where they settled in the treetops. Again, not
something I've ever seen there. (I've reported this separately for the
June G-G survey.) Also noteworthy (though not unprecedented) was a pair
of Black-shouldered Kites in the fenced paddock at the top of the
peninsula. One or both birds have been there on all of my recent visits
to the Lake.
