Lots of questions and there probably aren't answers and even if there were,
we wouldn't know which of several possible answers are more correct. Yes
these things have been discussed before and yes there appears to be a strong
trend towards them favouring roosting in places where lights are on all
night. Your observation that there are no droppings under the trees, on cars
or people is a thought I had not encountered before or don't recall it.

About "Does a HANZAB give information about these sorts of activities?". I
was the reviewer / referee of the draft HANZAB text for that species,
although that was years ago, so I don't know of answers. Sure HANZAB
describes about them "forming large noisy communal roosts..." (page 196).

We have jus retuned from Perth. The hundreds of lorikeets that roost on the
Norfolk Island pines there have been commented on before. At about 30
minutes before sunset, these birds fly in, in small flocks, until just after
sunset. They make a tremendous din. There could be thousands. They stay
there all night. When they first arrive there is a lot of communication
between them. Arguing and disputing? pleased to see each other after a day
apart? don't really know each other, but are being friendly? or aggressive?
How far do they come from? There are no droppings under the trees, on cars
or people. How come? I they did spot on cars or picnic spots there would be
an outcry against them. They are very unpopular in Perth because they are
displacing the local Port Lincoln parrot. No hope of getting rid of them
now

There is more information if you go to Google and then to 'rainbow lorikeets
at Cottesloe Beach', but that information does not answer any of my
questions

"Sculpture on the Beach" was on at Cottesloe while we were there. Parking
difficult. It is a wonderful beach to display 70 sculptures. (I am a bit
biased because I come from Cottesloe). Swimming good, not many people in the
water, although the weather was very hot. Spooked by sharks?

The sun sets in the right direction, over the sea, over Rottnest, beautiful

Also at Perth airport, they seem to perch there all night, again, hundreds.
Lights are on there all night. Also street lights are on at Cottesloe all
night.

Does a HANZAB give information about these sorts of activities?

Also, the osprey nest at Devil's Elbow, on a very inadequate dead tree, is
still there. We did not see any sign of the ospreys though.
