On the 6 March I posted a photo of a Speckled
Warbler which appeared to be gathering nesting material. At the time I found a
rough structure which could have been the start if a nest. I checked the
structure again today and found it completed. There was no sign of the
birds initially but both a male and female appeared after about 5 minutes. Both
birds landed on the ground near the nest and after moving around the area for
some time, the male finally entered the nest and was still inside when I
left about 10 minutes later.
The ACT Atlas mentions one record of autumn
breeding in 1987 and Margaret Leggoe responded to my last post with some photos
of taken last year of a bird carrying nesting material. While I am aware
that Speckled Warblers have been reported breeding in most months of the year in
other places, are there other breeding records for the ACT at this time of
year?
