had an email from Mike Shultz in Leeton, saying that the 250ml of rain
Leeton received in the recent downpour (they received half their
annual rainfall in one day) almost certainly means there won't be a
Leeton birdfair this year - Fivebough is entirely under water (half a
metre over the track into the swamp) and it won't dry out in time for
the planned birdfair in Sept.
Mike also mentioned birds are on the increase there, which is good news.
Yenda has also been under water, which means Binya and Cocopara will
be very soggy for some time (not sure if there's a backup backup plan
for the COG Easter campout. Cocopara is currently closed because
there's no safe access). many other parks in the area also closed - if
you're venturing down that way call the Parks Office in Griffith on 02
69668100 for latest info on closures. My brother in Whitton (20km
from Leeton) reports that a number of the villages around the area
were flooded, as were very many minor roads and the Sturt Highway at
Narrandera and even the Leeton-Narrandera road near the Cudgel
Sandhills. the Highway isn't a big news, it goes under regularly when
the Murrumbidgee comes up, but to hear that villages like Murrami were
flooded for first time in my lifetime is more surprising...
Birdwatching from the Sturt Highway Wagga - Narrandera into the
flooded paddocks is often quite good once the roads are safe - a year
of so ago there were patches with dozens of egrets, spoonbills,
herons, dotterels and so on, and a couple of places on the
Collingullie-Urana road attracted groups of Plumed whistling ducks.
