In response to Jack’s query, I haven’t seen or heard our young Koel for a few days, maybe since Sat 25th, although until then there was rarely a day that I didn’t notice it as it seemed to move around in a fairly small area. I first noticed it and reported it to this list on Tues 31st Jan. When I last looked at it about a week ago it had a much longer tail than when I first saw it, very clear pale line across its face, very clear mottled and barred patterns showing no signs of turning black. I have it ticked in 4 successive weeks on my chart, but not this week. The adult Koels have been much less in evidence around here this year than in the previous 3-4 years. However yesterday morning I heard the “wirra wirra” call coming from some tall pinus radiata in a park a couple of streets away. I couldn’t see the bird that was calling, but the place the call was coming from was where I first ever saw a Koel (male) around here about 4-5 years ago when I went to track down the weird “ko-el” call. Not sure whether this would be significant or a coincidence.

Cheers,

Sue Beatty,

Holder
