Thanks Julian, this many trillers at this time of year is certainly a surprise to me, especially the breeding activity which Elizabeth Compston had already alerted us to earlier in the week.

And in such cool weather too, I would have thought this would have had most of them rushing off for somewhere warmer long ago.

I’m certainly aware and have witnessed first hand that the odd Rufous Songlark may overwinter, but I’ve always understood the White-winged Triller to be a total migrant.

So please keep tabs on these to see what happens, and could other subscribers keep and eye and ear out for them in your local patch to see if it’s being replicated in other parts of the ACT?

Many thanks

There were three pairs (or looked like pairs, one might have been children though they seemed mature) of White-winged Trillers in lower Callum Brae yesterday. One pair was building a nest, and another were chasing each other in what could still be courtship business.

Jack said in last Gang-gang “…Rufous Songlark and White-winged Triller. As noted previously

the last two were present in surprising numbers this year, particularly the former, given the reasonable conditions

inland, but the last reports of them were on 8 January and 24 December, respectively. Both species are

much quieter and harder to identify post breeding and may have left early, and by the time this issue of Ganggang

reaches you in early February any records of these species will be very significant.”
