Blue Mountains- Evans lookout Rd. On 8/1/12
The walk from the Grand Canyon carpark to Evans Lookout (along the Rd), is usually very worthwhile for plants and birds. The highlight was seeing 3 Rock Warblers, a lifetick for me, one was begging and being fed every few minutes. The juvenile got to within 1m of me and seemed curious, and I even took a photo from my mobile.
Others: 1 pilotbird, 4 yellow tailed black cockatoos, a satin bowerbird, 1 yellow robin, >20 scrubwrens, strangely a brown headed honeyeater, and a pair of whipbirds. Bell miners could be heard from the lookout.
Plants included many trigger plants, goodenea with elongate slightly serrated leaves, lobelias, an epacrid, 2 Dampiera species- one with big leaves, one with hairy small ovate leaves, isopogans, and one yellow leek orchid??? (I got some photos). Butterfly with brown/blue and orange wings. Leura water skinks.
Heading from the E Lookout to Govetts Leap I almost stumbled on a small dragon, it looked too flat and wide for a Jacky Lizard, I need to check Cogger but dont lug that to email cafes. A dark menacing storm threatened, but not without its benefits, seeing 3 fork tailed swifts and 1 WTNT. Plus I believe 1 female Giant Dragonfly, Petalura gigantea, an endangered species, which I reported to NSW NPWS. I almost beat the storm but it hit when walking from Blackheath 'CBD' to the train and I was drenched.
