Hi Peter and other COG people

Happy New Year to all.

Re Bird Call resources,
Locally, the COG site has some bird calls.
The call files (where they exist) are embedded in the images in the "Birds of Canberra Gardens" pages.
http://garden.canberrabirds.org.au/contents/birdGroups/alphabeticListing.htm

On an Australia-wide basis, I use the Sydney-based "Birds in Backyards" site,  created by the Australian Museum, and now funded by Birds Australia. Their species list is restricted to the most common and popularly searched-for species of the East Coast of Australia.
The calls they use are recorded by Fred Van Gessel. They are copyrighted, but it is OK to access them freely, for ID purposes.

A warning though, until one becomes familiar with the site, the fact that they use a common name order sorted by FIRST NAME, is very annoying..
  • B for Brown Thornbill
  • Y for Yellow-rumped Thornbill.
Go Figure.

*************

Birdpedia (Australia) has many bird calls.
That site is not massively user-friendly, but once you work it out, it has a lot of information on the vast majority of Australian birds.
Some (mostly the Passerines) have sound files associated with them.
You can use these links to go to the Australian part of the site.

If you are looking to buy CDs of Bird Calls, David Stewart, who will still be remembered by many older COG members, has a commercial site where he sells CDs of Nature Sounds, (not just bird calls). He has bird calls sorted by regions.

There is also an "App" which one can download, which is an electronic version of the Michael Morcombe book (with associated bird calls.

**New - iPhone / iPod touch App and Android App now available (released 2011). Based on Michael Morcombe Field Guide to Australian Birds (Compact Edition) and contains calls of over 650 species from Nature Sound.

Hope those notes help you.

Hopefully other COG members will share their favourite on-line links.

Cheers

Denis Wilson

Hello Martin
Do you (or anyone else) know of a link to access Australian bird songs please?
Happy New Year.
