This picture shows it well. The red knees (from which is is hopefully named - but probably not) are inside / under the red feathers on the flanks. Coincidentally, as you can see, the ankles are also red. Just as, for example, Black-shouldered Kites have black along the forearm and wrist, not the shoulder.

A pair of Red-Kneed Dotterels,Jerrabomberra wetlands, opposite the Fulica hide, more or less where Maurits Zwankhuizen  mentioned the other day.
