No, not the bird  -  the fish.  I sent a series to Bryan Pratt, who thinks probably a weatherloach  - not the typical colour but he has seen some like this (pinkish-gold beneath).

 

The night-heron got this, while other herons seemed to overlook it (in the much-traversed Kelly Swamp shallows), by patient waiting for at least 20 minutes.  You would not have thought the bird was hunting.  The fish must have been deep in the grass roots.

 

Incidentally, one site says the weatherloach was first introduced to NSW streams via Ginninderra Creek.
