As someone who grew up in Greece I can tell you that it has fantastic bird life and is along with Spain the places to go for birdwatching. This website should help if you are interested in visiting:

Unfortunately most Greeks suffer from an utter and complete disregard for the natural world and would rather arson and bull doze it to make more Euros... oh and shoot it out of the sky too, then not collect the bodies and leave them for you to find... or capture them in vast quantities for consumption or the pet trade... Fortunately things are changing now, but it still has a long way to go.

I grew up in Athens, a crowded, green less and bird less city as you can imagine and I was 'different' from your typical Greek. I like animals and want them constantly around me, I like my garden to be wild and not covered in concrete (yes, this is a scene from many a movie, but it is 100% true unfortunately), I never understood the fuss behind football (soccer...) and I've never liked nightclubs... Being a teenager was difficult, but I had my garden, my birds and pets to pull me through... oh and I had Australia, that helped a lot too...

Cheers,

D.

If there is one thing we know about Greece, it's that there are great minds and innovative thinkers. Perhaps they have been riding on previous coat tails for too long. It sure sounds like it.

Rather than blaming everyone, perhaps this is a wake up call.
Employ that greek ingenuity and innovation, to create new ideas, business, and products/produce.
For me personally, I am stunned by the ecotourism potential of the shorelines, amazing vistas, its archeology/history, and the amazing wildlife. That is what draws me.
I just wonder what birds are present.
