I did not initiate this debate and to date I have not contributed to the discussion because I believe it is important for everyone (Canberra birders/COG members/Canberrabirds subscribers) to discuss and debate how they submit their sightings, maintain their lists and how they want to access their information.

From the outset I should make it clear that I do not offer a service, 'Eremaea Birds' (Eremaea)  provides the system and service and I simply moderate Birdline ACT (I also do use Eremaea to maintain my lists). Eremaea offers two services:
1. An Australia-wide system of birdlines, which includes Birdline ACT
2. An online listing system for individual birders to maintain lists of birds seen in the ACT (or indeed anywhere in the world)

However...

This debate has now (inadvertently) become personal and there is potentially damaging misinformation in the public domain, so I would like to take this opportunity to correct the public record. In response to David McDonald's email, David has asked that I correct his errors  as he is about to travel interstate. Specifically:

1. ALL information, both lists and Birdline ACT sightings, is geocoded. The geocoding of Birdline ACT reports is done by the moderators (when the report is received and before the report is forwarded to Birds Australia). Individuals geocode their own lists.

2. Eremaea is a private company but a not for profit company. From Eremaea's website, 'Any profit from Eremaea Birds, should it ever eventuate, will be applied to practical, on-the-ground conservation projects. Full details will be reported on this web site'.

3. Individual birders own any sightings and photographs contributed to Eremaea. In the event that the service is longer offered, individual contributors can receive their data in a flat file.

In response to the comment contained in David's email that Eremaea is not responsive to COG's needs and will not accept the COG area of interest (AOI) as a geographical boundary, Eremaea has not been formally asked to do anything on COG's behalf. I did ask Eremaea if the NSW parts of COG's AOI interest could be recognised in Birdline ACT and I was informed that this could not be achieved because data was arranged by state/territory/ country. I considered this a reasonable response so did not pursue it further. I would ask a question of people who keep lists. Do you keep a COG AOI list or an ACT list and a NSW list?

It is important to recognise that COG has an agreement with Birds Australia to receive data from within the AOI. If you enter sightings into Eremaea you can elect to send your sightings to BA. If you use Birdline ACT, the moderators make this decision for you and they send all sighting data to Birds Australia.

May I encourage subscribers to read about Eremaea and what it can do for you. This can be found at  http://www.eremaea.com/WhoIs.aspx.  I have included the page below.

If you have any specific questions, or would like further information or even a demonstration, then please contact me offline. I hope this meaningful debate continues.

Regards
Alastair
