Hello everyone
In my last post I referred to runners who were disturbing wildlife on
O'Connor Ridge. A COG member has raised with me the issue was whether it
is OK for mountain bikers and runners to use firetrails.
My view is that the fire trails are generally well designed and
maintained and should be available for runners and mountain bikers to
use. It seems to me that this is a useful and reasonable approach to
balancing various community interests in the reserve system.
As a matter of interest, the runners I observed on O'Connor Ridge were
not always using the fire trails, the 'informal trails' or even the
illegal trails. Some groups were simply crashing across country. It
looked to be a competitive event which involved finding points in the
forest. The illegal trails, which have been built to meander
extensively, simply to not provide the shortest distance between points
A and B. So some of the runners did not keep to them.
