The peace in Northcote Cres Deakin is currently being challenged by the persistent call of a Boobook Owl in a Eucalypt directly over the road from my house. There is another owl in the vicinity also calling probably some 200 to 400 metres away. The usual boo-book call shifts into a repeated “grunt” for about 30 seconds to a minute then back into boo-book. Both birds seem to do that but not in synch (ie one bird does not seem to be inducing the other to change call).
Having read HANZAB’s description of the calls, I think the second call is what they describe as the “Por” call.
The biggest frustration is that I have examined the tree with a powerful torch but I cannot see the bird! I think I shall go out and have another look.
